Hello World of Game Development

Hello and Welcome to Jonny’s Quest!

My name is Jonathan and I’m excited to finally share my blog with you! Being a programmer, the title seemed fitting. I thought I’d start off by talking a little about who I am and what I do. I live on a farm in Ohio and I love coding. I have a day job as a cook but thanks to COVID-19, I get to be a programmer full time! For now, at least.

I’ve been learning about java and software/game development for a few years now and figured I should start putting these skills to use. And what better way to do that than to make video games? They’ve been in my life for as long as I remember, and as far as I’m concerned, they’re here to stay. The more I learn about the process, the more I want to be a part of creating something great.

Of course, I like making software too. I’ve made a few desktop apps. A student-email, a checking account system, Udemy course stuff. But at this point, game programming comes a bit more naturally. I’ve always been drawn to character design and storytelling and the more I learn about game development, the closer I feel to having a way to express the overwhelming amount of ideas floating around in my head.

This blog is probably going to be about a few different things. But in a nutshell, you can expect to see some programming, some art, and some games. At the moment, I’m working with LibGDX and Aseprite to make a small prototype. There are a few books I’m working through but my primary focus is going to be learning the fundamentals of LibGDX and game development. I’m excited to share the projects and artwork I’m working on, learn a lot, and hopefully collaborate with some like-minded developers and artists to make some amazing things!
