Progress Update – Programming & Games

For the past few days, my motivation has been pretty high. I’ve been programming, drawing, and playing some games here and there. I’m figuring out how to do a lot of things and improving my fundamentals as a character artist and a game programmer. I’m getting close to a point where I feel like I can make a pretty good resume.

After coming to a stopping point with my space shooter game, I wasn’t exactly sure which step to take. I planned on jumping straight into making a text adventure game but changed my mind after a bit of research. Apparently libGDX is limiting when it comes to text. Not only that, but you can run into problems when using object oriented concepts with text RPGs. I figure it would be a better idea to make one when I want to learn html & javascript.

I decided to continue working through the same book despite the problems I’ve been having. I’m still learning a lot and soon I’ll know enough to start prototyping a lot of my ideas. Instead of making a text adventure, I’m going to make a mostly-text adventure with libGDX. Something with a few RPG elements, a map, and a UI.

I spent most of yesterday adding UI components to my game Coin Collector. A start button, a quit button, and a reset button. I also added an NPC that tells you what to do and what not to do with some dialogue boxes. I’m pretty happy with the results and finally finished tweaking things this morning.

Now that I have two projects I’m fairly satisfied with, I think it’s a good idea to finally make a GitHub account. It’s not something I’ve been avoiding on purpose, but I never really had anything to put on one until now. I know it’s important to know how to work with git repositories and other developers and I’m finally getting to a point where I feel comfortable sharing my code and collaborating on other projects.
