Jonny’s Quest – Project & Progress Update

A month into the quarantine and I can feel my motivation go up and down. I’ve made no significant progress with my programming or my drawing in the past few days thanks to a Dragon’s Dogma bender. It’s a great game but I decided I should slow down a bit.

I just spent the better part of the afternoon trying to figure out the collision detection in my space shooter game. Then when I couldn’t figure it out, I spent another hour writing and formatting the problem in a Stack Overflow post. My first one, in fact. I knew the time would come but I’ve had pretty good luck figuring things out on my own so far.

In the meantime, I figured I’d look at some other LibGDX books and maybe start another project. Honestly, I forget why I even decided on the one I’m using. Probably because it’s free. I like working with books over online tutorials most of the time. But I do like to get information from as many sources as possible. Considering the book I’m using is IDE-specific and a little older, it’s probably smart to explore other options.

I also want to start making a text-adventure game. I made one a while back without using a framework and I’d like to recreate it in LibGDX and make it cross platform. Then maybe upload it to GitHub and make it so people can add sections or levels. I know that working on projects with others is part of becoming a software and getting a job.

Creating a GitHub account is something I’ve been meaning to do for a while. I think I finally have a few significant projects I could add. It would definitely make it easier to get help with future projects. Not only that, but I’m finally getting to a point where I feel comfortable potentially helping others and contributing to something. I want to do as much as I can to build an online presence.
